small by design- a first choice 11+ alternative
Rochester Independent College’s Lower School offers children from the age of 11 a world of difference from intimidatingly large secondary schools.
Student needs are more clearly recognised and focused upon in a smaller school, human scale scale setting. In class sizes that average 8, students are better known and relationships between teachers and students and students with each other prosper. A smaller school size allows more opportunity for our teachers to work closely together and share information. It allows us to provide an unparalleled level of feedback to parents in regular email reports and one to one meetings.
We focus on ensuring the children who join us are happy and supported towards academic success and personal confidence. We don’t put our prospective students through the ordeal of the 11+ or an entrance exam, believing everyone is capable of succeeding in the right environment. A strong personal tutor system ensures everyone is carefully monitored and supported.
As the political momentum in education seems to be moving towards a bigger is best’ approach and many secondary schools are merging to create monster sized academies RIC is determined to continue demonstrating that small schools work for many years to come. We enthusiastically welcome visitors to the College who would like to learn more about our ethos.
“I was so impressed with the classes and teaching I saw and came away with a very positive view of the College, its ethos and aspirations. The priority of teaching and learning was foremost and the students projected such a positive attitude towards their studies”
