English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a subject that helps international students develop both their productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. We build students' general English knowledge as well as prepare them for the IELTS exam which is necessary towards successful University Entrance.
In the EAL classroom, the teacher acts as a facilitator to encourage as much speaking and cooperative learning as possible. International students have practice carrying out presentations, projects, and even writing and producing a play. Last year the Year 13 Class put on a highly successful production of The Great Gatsby!
We offer subject-specific lessons with one-on-one support for students with English-heavy subjects for their “A” levels. Support is targeted to help international students develop their study skills and confidence in their subject - to Succeed!
The EAL team creates an environment where all International Students can feel safe, comfortable and develop strong bonds with their peers, so they feel home at Rochester Independent College.
